Autistici/Inventati shutdown: an unprecedented measure taken against alternative hosting providers

12 giorni: è il tempo che è bastato all’amministrazione Trump per far chiudere un hosting italiano di servizi digitali liberi sulla base di accuse calunniose, senza alcuna decisione giudiziaria. Un ulteriore atto che disegna un funesto destino per gli hosting alternativi che difendono la privacy in tutto il mondo.

Raramente prendiamo la parola per commentare l’attualità politica, per mancanza di tempo volontario da dedicare alla redazione di questo blog. Ma quest’ultima notizia esce dall’ordinario, e riteniamo che meriti la vostra massima attenzione.

Un dramma in tre atti

Autistici/Inventati, che abbrevieremo A/I in questo articolo, è un collettivo italiano che ospita gratuitamente migliaia di blog, caselle di posta elettronica, mailing list e altri servizi online, alternativi ai giganti del digitale, ed esiste da 25 anni: una sorta di Framasoft italiano.

Il 26 agosto 2026, l’amministrazione Trump ha designato A/I come organizzazione terroristica internazionale e ha ordinato a tutte le organizzazioni statunitensi che commerciano con A/I di interrompere immediatamente ogni transazione con il collettivo. Di conseguenza, l’organismo responsabile del .org, gestito da un’organizzazione statunitense, ha sospeso il loro nome di dominio autistici.org, come spiega il post di blog tecnico di Stéphane Bortzmeyer. Da un momento all’altro, tutti gli indirizzi email ospitati da A/I sono stati così tagliati senza preavviso.

Pochi giorni dopo, il 2 settembre, apprendiamo che Banca Etica, la banca italiana utilizzata da A/I, ha congelato i conti bancari del collettivo su ordine degli Stati Uniti. La banca arriva persino a pubblicare essa stessa un articolo di blog (in italiano) per giustificare di aver subito un ricatto da parte dell’amministrazione Trump: o Banca Etica chiude il conto bancario di A/I, o la banca non può più commerciare con le imprese basate negli Stati Uniti. La scelta di Banca Etica non si è fatta attendere.

Il 6 settembre, A/I annuncia ufficialmente la propria chiusura in un post di blog, spiegando che i suoi membri non desiderano mettere in pericolo i propri cari e i propri utenti, poiché la repressione su queste accuse può rapidamente diventare sproporzionata. Ciò ricorda tristemente la situazione vissuta dal giudice Guillou della Corte penale internazionale, che è stato escluso, insieme ai suoi cari, dal sistema bancario internazionale e da alcune piattaforme statunitensi, per aver emesso un mandato d’arresto contro il Primo ministro israeliano Benyamin Netanyahou.

Gli hosting alternativi messi in causa

Secondo l’organizzazione di stampa Sabot Media, l’amministrazione Trump ha identificato gli hosting di servizi digitali extraterritoriali come una minaccia per gli Stati Uniti, poiché i dati non sono altrettanto facilmente accessibili alla polizia statunitense quanto con il cloud di Google o Microsoft.

Inoltre, Sabot Media ricorda giustamente che A/I è un’organizzazione che si definisce risolutamente antifascista, e che i movimenti antifascisti sono stati identificati come “terroristi” dall’amministrazione Trump in seguito all’assassinio di Charlie Kirk nel settembre 2025, una figura emblematica dell’ultranazionalismo statunitense particolarmente nota per i suoi interventi dal carattere razzista, misogino, xenofobo e transfobico.

Un senso di sgomento

La chiusura di A/I ha rapidamente fatto il giro della stampa informatica e provocato un’ondata di sgomento tra i difensori delle libertà digitali, noi compresi.

Infatti, questo caso inedito dimostra che non basta più avere server in Europa e rispettare la legge francese per essere risparmiati dalle misure autoritarie del governo Trump: i mezzi di pressione si estendono alle organizzazioni statunitensi, ma anche alle banche straniere, e forse anche ai dirigenti degli hosting alternativi e ai loro cari, e ciò senza la minima decisione giudiziaria.

Questo attacco alle nostre libertà porta naturalmente a mettere in discussione la definizione stessa di terrorismo: fornire un’alternativa a Google, è terrorismo? Se A/I è stato preso di mira, perché non Framasoft, un membro del collettivo CHATONS, oppure… noi? E se fossimo i prossimi?

Questo senso di impotenza, di essere sopraffatti di fronte a questi eventi assurdi che si susseguono, di accuse insensate e irrazionali, sono caratteristici delle elucubrazioni di Donald Trump: non lasciano più spazio alla riflessione sul lungo periodo, all’analisi a mente fredda del panorama tecnico-giuridico, per lasciare spazio solo alla rassegnazione e alla paura.

Organizziamo la risposta

Tocca a noi ora uscire da questo sgomento.

Quale sarebbe il nostro posto, quale sarebbe il nostro ruolo da svolgere come hosting associativo, in questi momenti di incertezza politica, se non fossimo mobilitati in questi momenti?

Proponiamo servizi digitali simili a quelli di A/I, quindi la nostra missione ci obbliga: in risposta a questa repressione nei loro confronti, abbiamo deciso collettivamente di proporre un hosting agli ex membri di A/I.

Offriamo l’adesione d’onore alla nostra associazione e uno spazio WordPress di 5 GB per gli ex utenti dei blog di A/I (ospitati sul dominio noblogs.org).

• L’hosting è gratuito, senza limite di durata, finché ne avremo la capacità. Invieremo di tanto in tanto un’email per verificare che desideriate ancora essere ospitati da noi.

12 days: That’s the time it took for the Trump administration, under the pretense of slanderous accusations, to force an Italian alternative hosting provider to shut down, without the right to justice and to a fair trial. Yet another act that paints a picture of a dire future for any alternative hosting providers across the world, who strive to defend everyone’s right to privacy.

We rarely write to comment the political news, given the lack of volunteer time that we can put towards writing articles for this blog. That being said, this event is out of the ordinary, and we believe that this situation deserves both our time and your full attention.

🔗A drama in three acts

Autistici/Inventati (which we will be shortening to A/I in this article) is an Italian collective that, for the last 25 years, had been hosting thousands of blogs, mailboxes, mailing lists and other online services, on a nonprofit basis, as alternatives to services provided by Big Tech: we can think of them as an Italian counterpart to Framasoft.

On August 26th, 2026, the Trump administration officially designated A/I as an international terrorist organisation and issued an order to all organisations from the United States trading with A/I to immediately cease doing so. As a result, the organisation in charge of the .org top level domain, an US-based non-profit, suspended their domain name autistici.org. All of a sudden, all of the email addresses hosted by A/I were cut off without any prior warning.

A few days later, on September 2nd, it was revealed that Banca Etica, the Italian bank used by A/I, froze the collective’s bank accounts in compliance with the United States’ order. The bank went as far as to publish an article (in Italian) to justify their actions: the Trump administration blackmailed the bank by threatening to put an end to the bank’s ability to trade with US-based companies if Banca Etica were to refuse to close A/I’s bank account. Needless to say that Banca Etica acted swiftly.

A/I’s shutdown was announced on September 6th, through an official blog post, explaining that their members did not want to endanger their close ones and their users, given that the repression based on the accusations against them could quickly reach disproportionate levels - which we have seen before. We are sorrowingly reminded of the situation that Judge Guillou, working for the International Criminal Court, had to go through, after he and his close ones were excluded from the international banking system, as well as certain US-based platforms, due to his participation in the ruling against Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

🔗Putting the blame on alternative hosting providers

According to Sabot Media, a press organisation, the Trump administration identified foreign digital service providers as a threat to the United States, because data isn’t as easily or readily accessible by the United States police as it is with Google or Microsoft’s cloud.

Furthermore, Sabot Media rightly calls to mind that A/I is an organisation that defines itself as unabashedly anti-fascist, and that anti-fascist movements have been designated as “terrorist” by the Trump administration after Charlie Kirk’s assassination in September 2025 - the poster child for the United States ultra-nationalism, notably known for his racist, misogynistic, xenophobic and transphobic remarks.

🔗A sense of shock and disbelief

A/I’s closure quickly made headlines across IT press, and sent out a wave of dismay to those who defend digital liberties, us included.

This previously unseen situation makes it clear that, in order to be spared from the Trump government’s authoritarianism, having servers in Europe and respecting French law isn’t enough: the pressure doesn’t only affect US-based companies, but also foreign banks, and may reach leaders of alternative hosting providers and their relatives as well, all without a single ruling in the matter.

This attack against our liberties naturally leads us to question the definition of terrorism: is providing an alternative to Google a terrorist act? If A/I was targeted, is an organisation like Framasoft next in line? Or another member of the CHATONS collective? Or perhaps… us? What if we were next?

The feeling of being overwhelmingly powerless, with all of these absurd events that keep happening one after the other over preposterous and irrational accusations, is typical of Donald Trump’s nonsensical ramblings. Rambling that no longer allows for any kind of in-depth, long-term thought, nor to reflect calmly on the consequences of those actions from a technical-legal standpoint, and replaces all forms of critical thought with fear and resignation.

🔗It’s time to fight back

It’s our turn to free ourselves from this stunning shock.

What would our role be, as an alternative hosting provider, in these times of political uncertainty, if we didn’t step up and take action?

Given we host services that are very similar to those A/I did, our very own purpose compels us to reply to this repression: we have collectively decided to offer free hosting to members of A/I.

We are offering a honorary membership to our non-profit, as well as a 5 GB WordPress space for previous users of A/I’s blogs (hosted on the noblogs.org domain).

• The hosting is free, with no time limits, as long as we are able to. We will send you an email once in a while to make sure you still want to host your page with us.
• The honorary membership lasts for a year, and allows you to participate to our general assembly. You can renew it afterwards for 10 euros. You do not need to renew your membership to keep your blog online!
• Creating email addresses through our mail service is included in the membership.

We are really understanding of why the collective had to stop its activities in the face of repression brought on by the Trump administration. Our decision to act came from our will to support all of those who trusted A/I, as well as those who believe in a free and decentralised internet, one in which it is still possible to criticise systems of oppression, and one where we can all collectively reflect on how to improve our living and existing conditions.
